Remaining Academy Cup Semi-finalists to be Set
The last of the 2012 Academy Cup semi-finalists will be known after this weekend’s games. 10 of the 12 spots have already been taken, and on Saturday four teams will face off to decide the other two.
At 2:15 pm at Milton Sports Park, Power FC will face DPSoccer in the last Senior Boys Showcase quarterfinal. After a slow start, Power FC are unbeaten in their last three games, while DPSoccer are winless in three since starting 2-0. The teams last played on July 7th, when they faced each other in a game that finished 1-1.
Immediately following the Sr. Boys game, an Intermediate Boys quarterfinal will kick off between Power FC and Toronto Skillz. The teams are at opposite ends of the standings, with Power FC in second place behind ANB while Toronto Skillz are at the bottom of the table. However, Toronto Skillz are coming off a big 5-3 win over Masters FA. Power FC won the only regular season matchup between these teams 4-3 back in April.
The Junior Boys semi-finalists have already been set. Toronto Skillz earned a bye and will face Eurostar FA, who defeated RVDL 2-1 in a closely contested match back in June. On the other side, Sigma FC defeated Power FC and Bryst surprised Masters FA to book their places in the semis.
The winner of the Power FC – Toronto Skillz matchup will face 1st place ANB Futbol in one Int. Boys semi-final. ANB edged Masters FA 2-1 to earn their semi-final berth. Bryst FA’s 3-1 quarterfinal victory over RVDL booked their place in the semis to face Sigma FC.
The biggest upset of the Cup thus far took place in the Sr. Boys draw, where the last place Toronto Skillz knocked off 2nd place Atak Sports in penalties after a 2-2 regulation draw. Toronto Skillz will face the winner of Saturday’s DPSoccer – Power FC quarterfinal. On the other side of the draw, ANB Futbol edged Bryst FA 1-0 while Sigma FC demolished Metropolitan FA to set up a highly anticipated semi-final.
The 2012 SAAC Academy Cup is single elimination knockout tournament played during the regular season. It will culminate in the Cup finals on November 17, 2012 at Etobicoke Centennial Stadium.
